Women are advised to start folic acid (400mcg which is available from supermarkets and pharmacys) when thinking about conceiving and until 12 weeks of pregnancy. Some women are recommended to take a higher dose (5mg) which needs to be prescribed. ➡️ you have previously had a pregnancy affected by a neural tube defect you or the baby's biological father have a neural tube defect ➡️ you or the baby's biological father have a family history of neural tube defects ➡️ you have diabetes ➡️ you have a BMI > 30 ➡️ you have sickle cell disease ➡️ you're taking certain epilepsy medicines ➡️ you're taking antiretroviral medicines for HIV It is also recommended that pregnant women also take 10mcg of vitamin D each day. https://www.nhs.uk/pregnancy/keeping-well/vitamins-supplements-and-nutrition/
